Eyelid Surgery in New Jersey
Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, helps to rejuvenate the droopy and sagging eyelids. Dr. Gordon Kaplan specializes in eyelid surgery for his patients in the New Jersey area. Eye bags usually give off an impression of fatigue and older age. By removing the fatty tissue and skin that create them, Dr. Kaplan is able to give his patients a more rested and youthful appearance.
Sometimes as we age, our eyes seem to look older than the rest of our faces. Your eyes might have creases and crow’s feet at the corners, bags under them, or brows that droop excessively. It’s a fact of life that aging around the eyes is inevitable. Dr. Kaplan helps women and men in NJ look and feel younger and more refreshed through eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty).
Eyelid surgery can be performed on either the upper and lower lids or both. Whether you want to improve your appearance or are experiencing functional problems with your eyelids, eyelid surgery can rejuvenate the area surrounding your eyes.
Eyelid surgery may treat the following issues:
- Loose or sagging skin that creates folds or disturbs the natural contour of the upper eyelid, sometimes impairing vision
- Excess fatty deposits that appear as puffiness in the eyelids
- Bags under the eyes
- Drooping lower eyelids that reveal white below the iris
- Excess skin and fine wrinkles of the lower eyelid

"Very friendly staff. Dr. Gordon Kaplan is professional, kind, caring and knowledgeable. I have been his patient for seven years and have received Botox, fillers and thread treatments. I have always had amazing results. I continue to see him even though I moved three hours away from his office 4 years ago. It’s worth the trip, because I know I am in safe hands. I never thought that I would be comfortable having any surgical procedure on my face. However, I have so much confidence in Dr.Kaplan that I am having upper and lower eyelid blespharoplasty done in a couple of weeks. Thank you Dr.Kaplan and staff."- T.S. / Google / Sep 01, 2021

Eyelid surgery is a relatively straightforward type of procedure. Your plastic surgeon will make a series of small incisions that follow the shape of the lids around your eye. Within these incisions, Dr. Kaplan will lift the skin, eliminate fat deposits underneath, and tighten the muscle and skin to form the new, tighter contour of your eyelids. Some people require a brow lift instead of eyelid surgery to attain the look they desire.
In some cases, Dr. Kaplan may perform what is known as transconjunctival eyelid surgery. This is often done in conjunction with laser resurfacing of the lower eyelids. This procedure does not involve the removal of any skin under your eye. Instead, the plastic surgeon makes small incisions on the inner part of your lower eyelids and removes the fat that has accumulated there. Because the incisions are made on the inside of your lower lids, there will be no visible scars after transconjunctival eyelid surgery.
Additionally, Dr. Kaplan performs pinch blepharoplasty, which is performed with a small incision just below the lower eyelashes. The lower eyelid skin is then pinched, and any necessary excess skin is removed. The area will then be lifted and smoothed before the incision is carefully closed. This expert technique allows for optimal results with a lower risk of complications and shorter recovery times.
In most cases, eyelid surgery takes a couple of hours and is usually performed as an outpatient procedure with local anesthesia and calming relaxants in Dr. Kaplan’s New Jersey offices. You may feel a little pressure during the procedure, but for the most part you will be quite relaxed and comfortable.
Recovering after your eyelid surgery, you may have a dressing over your eyes and some type of soothing ointment. You may experience some discomfort, but it is usually not long-lasting and can be controlled with prescription medication.
- Propping a pillow behind your head to support it upright to help reduce any swelling
- Using eye drops to soothe and moisten your eyelids
- Protecting your eyes from bright light and direct sun
- Placing cool washcloths on your eyes
After a few days or a week following your eyelid surgery, your stitches will be taken out. You also will begin to notice an improvement in the way your eyes look. The benefits of having eyelid surgery will become more and more obvious to you over the next weeks and months. Keep in mind that everybody heals at a different rate. You’ll visit your plastic surgeon several times during your recuperation. Be sure to follow the directions he or she gives you closely to ensure optimum healing.
Potential Risks and Complications
There are very few risks associated with eyelid surgery and any complications are usually very minor. You may have some slight vision blurriness for a couple of days following your surgery, which will correct itself. You may also feel some tightness when you close your eyes, but this will usually also go away in a short time. And there may be some puffiness at the corners of your eyes from the surgery, which will lessen as you continue to recuperate.

Common Questions About Eyelid Surgery
Will insurance cover the cost of my eyelid surgery?
Most of the time, eyelid surgery is considered elective cosmetic surgery and is therefore not covered by most health plans in NJ. However, there are cases when eyelid surgery may be paid for by your insurance if it is considered a benefit to your vision. Discuss this with Dr. Kaplan and his staff and with your health insurance provider.
Is there eyelid surgery for just puffiness under the eyes?
Yes. This is called transconjunctival eyelid surgery. This procedure does not involve the removal of any skin below the eye. Instead, the plastic surgeon makes small incisions on the inner part of your lower eyelid and removes the fat that has accumulated there. Because the incisions are made on the inside of your lower lid, there will be no visible scars after this surgery.
Will I be able to wear contact lenses after my eyelid surgery?
After your eyelid surgery, you won’t be able to wear contact lenses for a couple of weeks or possibly longer. When you can wear them, they may feel uncomfortable until your eyelids complete the healing process.
Are there visible scars with eyelid surgery? In most cases, the scars from eyelid surgery are so carefully placed that they are virtually undetectable. Also, the scars will fade as time goes by, and you will hardly notice them. What you will notice are your refreshed, brighter, younger-looking eyes.
