GUIDE
What Is Xeomin?
Xeomin has been used around the world since 2005 and was introduced to the US market in 2010 by Merz Pharmaceuticals, LLC. Xeomin (incobotulinumtoxinA), made by Merz Pharmaceuticals, is approved by the US FDA for the treatment of adults with cervical dystonia or blepharospasm and moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows. IncobotulinumtoxinA is made from the bacteria that causes botulism.
Xeomin is a prescription medicine that is injected into muscles and used:
- To treat adults with cervical dystonia to decrease the severity of abnormal head position and neck pain
- To treat abnormal spasm of the eyelids (blepharospasm) in adults who have had prior treatment with onabotulinumtoxinA (Botox®)
Botulinum toxin is a naturally occurring protein produced by the bacteria Clostridium botulinum. Botulinum toxin type A- the active ingredient in Xeomin—is produced commercially from C. botulinum serotype A.
What Does Xeomin Treat?
Xeomin can be used to treat the issues below:
- Moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows
- Facial Wrinkles
- Crow’s Feet
- Forehead Wrinkles
Xeomin® is mostly used to treat dynamic facial wrinkles. Areas most commonly treated by Xeomin® include crow’s feet (lines around the eyes), worry lines between the eyebrows, and the lines across the forehead.
How Does Xeomin Work?
Xeomin is injected into muscles to decrease their activity. Xeomin blocks the release of a chemical messenger—acetylcholine—that conveys the signal from nerve terminals and causes muscle fibers to contract. Not all terminals are affected by botulinum toxin, so the muscles can still contract, just less forcefully. This allows the muscles to contract more normally. It blocks the signals from the nerves to the muscles. As a result, the targeted muscle cannot contract.
Xeomin® works by weakening the muscles of facial expression that insert onto the surface of the skin. Weakening the pull of these muscles on the skin causes the visible wrinkles to flatten out. Over time, cumulative benefits are observed as the skin remodels without the negative influence of the wrinkle-creating facial muscles.
Can I Switch To Xeomin® If I Have Used Botox® Or Dystport® In The Past?
Yes. Since Xeomin® acts in the same physiologic method as both Dysport® and Botox®, the products are interchangeable.
Are All The Botulinum Toxin Products The Same?
Not all botulinum toxin products are the same. This is reflected in the unique names for each product. The dose of Xeomin may be different from other botulinum toxin products.
What Is The Difference Between Xeomin®, Botox®, And Dysport®?
On a molecular level, Xeomin® is different from Botox® and Dysport® in that it does not contain any protein additives when packaged. The potential benefit of this is mainly for the rare patient who stopped responding to Botox® treatments because of the development of antibodies to the proteins.
How Is Xeomin Made?
In nature, C. botulinum produces the toxin in association with accessory proteins (toxin complex). Merz takes the toxin complex and employs a proprietary manufacturing process that isolates the therapeutic component and removes the accessory proteins to produce Xeomin.
