Taking a deeper look into the key cost factors, different options, and practical insights to help you decide on your perfect blepharoplasty procedure
It’s crucial to understand the different factors affecting eyelid surgery cost in order to ensure you get the greatest possible satisfaction from your procedure.
The average human being blinks their eyes at least 13,000 times a day. And over time, this constant use causes the skin of our eyelids to gradually sag and lose elasticity. The result can be a tired, sad look — and it can even impede on your ability to see clearly.
That’s where eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, can help…
What is Eyelid Surgery?
Blepharoplasty (or an “Eyelid Lift”) is a quick and easy facial rejuvenation procedure that can deliver lasting, natural-looking results.
The procedure works by removing skin, fat and muscle from around the eyelid, restoring a more firm and youthful look, or even altering the appearance of your eyes and brow (as desired).
The procedure is frequently undergone as an elective cosmetic surgery, but it may also be medical in nature when used to treat ptosis.
Eyelid surgery is defined into two categories, “upper and lower blepharoplasty,”
Understanding the Difference Between Upper vs. Lower Blepharoplasty
Feature | Upper Blepharoplasty | Lower Blepharoplasty |
Purpose | Frequently cosmetic, may also be used to treat vision impairment (ptosis) | Strictly cosmetic |
Ideal for | Droopy eyelids, vision obstruction, cosmetic concerns | Under-eye bags, wrinkles, dark circles |
Anesthesia | Many patients do not require general anesthesia unless it’s a combined (upper & lower) procedure | General anesthesia almost always used |
Incision Location | Hidden in upper natural crease of eyelid | Inside lower eyelid or just below lash line |
Result | Refreshed, youthful look with unobstructed vision | Transformed facial contours without bags, wrinkles or creases you may have grown accustomed to |
Recovery Time | 1-2 weeks for swelling/bruising to subside | 4-6 weeks for swelling/bruising to subside |
Typical Cost (New Jersey) | $4,500* | $6,500+* |

Note that the procedures may also be combined as upper & lower blepharoplasty. This may result in a marginal decrease in price, and it also comes with the important benefit of faster recovery and more noticeable results.
It’s also important to note that both upper & lower eyelid surgery provide lasting results, with minimal scarring, and relatively rapid recovery time.
Eyelid Lift Cost Factors
Eyelid surgery cost is determined by a few primary factors …
- Additional Expenses: Since eyelid surgery cost is relatively low and the procedure is fast, it’s often combined with a facelift or brow lift to elevate the results.
- Surgeon’s Fee: Each surgeon will have a different level of experience and expertise, with prices that fluctuate based on the local market. Their fee makes up a large percentage of the procedure’s cost, but their approach will also determine the quality of your results. So choose with care (more on that in a moment).
- Anesthesia Fee: With upper eyelid surgery, you may not require anesthesia (so the cost would be $0), or you may only need local anesthesia. For lower eyelid surgery, general anesthesia will be a requirement.
- Facility Fee: Since eyelid surgery is a relatively quick procedure, it’s frequently performed in-office here at the Kaplan Center. This helps ensure a comfortable space for procedure and recovery, while also keeping costs in check.
- Pre-Op & Post-Op Expenses: Consultations, medications and follow-ups.
Eyelid Surgery Cost in New Jersey
As you can see above, eyelid surgery cost is determined by a wide variety of different factors, with an estimated range of between $3,000 and $9,000 for the surgeon’s fee. The national average is just over $4,000.
While surgeon’s fees for New Jersey eyelid surgery typically run higher than the national average, that doesn’t account for other variables like facility fees and post-op/pre-op expenses.
For example, lower eyelid surgery requires general anesthesia, which can add a substantial additional cost to the procedure. You may prefer a specific facility over another for the procedure. Each of these variables will contribute to your overall cost, so it’s important to understand what you’re paying for.
The Kaplan Center is proud to have some of the highest-rated plastic and reconstructive surgery centers in the New York-New Jersey area. And we attribute that success to providing uncompromising care, at reasonable prices, with full transparency throughout the process.
Does Insurance Cover Eyelid Surgery?
Since it’s generally performed for cosmetic reasons, it’s considered an elective procedure, and eyelid surgery cost is not covered by insurers as a result.
Eyelid surgery can sometimes be performed for medical reasons, most often in cases of what’s called “ptosis,” where the eyelid gradually droops and begins to obscure vision.
In these cases, a doctor may prescribe corrective eyelid surgery. But this only applies to the upper eyelid. Lower Blepharoplasty is considered a purely cosmetic procedure in virtually every case.
As always, you’ll need to speak with your doctor and contact your insurer for details on whether the procedure may be covered. You will need to be pre-approved, and you may be responsible for additional costs and co-payments.
Even if the procedure isn’t covered by your insurer, you can still use funds from your Health Savings Accounts (HSA) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) to cover the cost.
Choosing the Right Blepharoplasty Surgeon in NJ
Every eyelid surgery is unique … with results determined by the patient’s body, their aesthetic goals, and the skills of their surgeon.
It’s a subtle procedure that’s relatively quick, with little downtime, and results that can last for years and years to come. So it’s critical to choose the right surgeon to help guide you through the process and deliver the results you deserve.
That means finding a surgeon who’s board-certified, with decades of specialized experience, a rolodex of impressive “before-and-after” photos, and a long list of happy testimonials from previous patients.
